A programme of heritage-led activities is being delivered to support the building restoration works by engaging local communities and visitors with local history and heritage, also providing training opportunities in traditional building skills.

Colouring Cumbrae is here!

A unique colouring book featuring most loved heritage spots and historical landmarks has been created as a physical outcome of the heritage-led workshops delivered to Cumbrae Primary School through Millport CARS.

The amazing sketches from local artist Jack H Sutton give you a chance to capture island’s beauty and culture on paper.  This is a colouring book that will inspire and unleash the inner artist in you. If the pictures inspire you, why not visit and capture the beauty and colours first-hand!

You can also find out interesting facts about each location by researching NAC Heritage and Culture’s online resource at North Ayrshire Heritage Trails (naheritagetrails.co.uk) – Cumbrae.

The book was donated to the local charity, Cumnbrae Forum to support their fundraising activities. It can be purchased from the Cumbrae Forum shop in Millport at 21 Guildford Street.

If you’re a charity located on the Isle of Cumbrae and wish to request the copies of the colouring book, contact Regeneration@north-ayrshire.gov.uk typing ‘Colouring Cumbrae’ in the subject of your email.

“Retrace the lines of Cumbrae’s heritage or fill them with colour. These drawings exist only as a wee guide for your expression and immersion in this fantastic place. Huge thanks to the Island for the inspiration, Kasia Smith for the opportunity and Andrew Robinson for the ideas.”

Jack H. Sutton

“The children have valued their involvement in this fascinating project, developing many transferable life skills whilst having the opportunity to work collaboratively with various groups to learn more about their local heritage and the beautiful Isle of Cumbrae.”

Millport Heritage Cycle

The successful pilot event took place on the 14th July 2019 as a family day out with a self-guided cycle ride following the Cumbrae Heritage Trail around the island and finishing at the Bike Festival. It combines the traditional visitor attraction/activities with local heritage discovery. We aimed for the cycle ride to be inclusive for all ages and abilities, however an extended route was available for those seeking an extra challenge.

Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions this event had to be cancelled in 2020.

Free Services

As the conservation works progresses under Millport CARS project we’re offering some free services to local property owners and tradesmen.

Our main contractor, John Fulton (Plumbers) Ltd, offered Property Health Checks and Upskilling in Traditional Roof and Leadwork, details of which are included in the posters below. Property Health Checks proved very popular and were delivered in August 2020, giving owners of traditional properties within the conservation area the opportunity to get their buildings visually inspected by our specialists.

These services were offered free of charge through the Millport CARS project. North Ayrshire Council actively encourages all consultants and contractors working within North Ayrshire communities, to provide community benefit initiatives that promote social cohesion and deliver positive outcomes for local people.
